What Is Kitchen Worktop Fitting & Replacement?

Worktop replacement is the removal of existing kitchen surfaces and the fitting of new ones onto sound existing carcasses. It is a targeted upgrade rather than a kitchen refit, and it typically costs a fraction of a full kitchen while changing the appearance of the room completely.

The craft is in the jointing and scribing. A worktop run has to follow a wall that is rarely straight, meet at mason's mitres that stay tight, take a sink and hob cut-out without weakening the span, and be sealed at every cut edge so water never reaches the core.

Who it suits

Is Kitchen Worktop Fitting & Replacement Right for You?

  • Kitchens where the units are sound but the surfaces are worn, burnt or swollen
  • Anyone selling a house and wanting the kitchen to present well
  • Rental properties needing a hard-wearing surface between tenancies
  • Homeowners upgrading from laminate to timber or solid surface

Most worktop replacements take 1 to 3 days. Stone and quartz require a separate template visit with roughly a week between templating and fitting.

What Actually Decides Whether This Works

Material changes the whole job

Laminate is quick and cost-effective. Solid timber needs oiling and moves with humidity. Compact laminate and solid surface allow thin profiles and undermounted sinks. Stone and quartz are templated and fitted by a specialist, which we coordinate.

Undermounted sinks need the right material

An undermounted sink cannot go into standard laminate, because the exposed core will swell. If that is the look you want, the material decision is made for you.

Check the carcasses before spending

New worktops on failing carcasses is money badly spent. We will tell you honestly at survey whether the units under them have another decade in them.

What Does Kitchen Worktop Fitting & Replacement Cost?

Prices depend on the room, the specification and how much of the existing layout changes. Every quote we give is fixed and in writing after a home visit — we do not price from photographs, because that is where surprise costs come from.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Worktop Fitting & Replacement

Can I replace worktops without replacing the kitchen?
Yes, replacing worktops on existing units is one of the most cost-effective kitchen upgrades available, provided the carcasses are sound and level. We check the units at survey — swollen bases, failed hinges or units that have dropped will need addressing first. Where the carcasses are good, new surfaces transform the room for a fraction of a full kitchen.
How long do solid timber worktops last?
A well-maintained solid timber worktop lasts 20 years or more, and can be sanded back and re-oiled repeatedly, which no other material allows. The maintenance requirement is real though: oiling every few months in the first year and once or twice a year afterwards, and immediate attention around the sink. If that sounds like a chore, laminate or compact is the better choice.
Do I need to be without a kitchen while worktops are replaced?
Only briefly. The sink and any hob are disconnected on the morning of the fit and reconnected the same day in most cases, so you are typically without water in the kitchen for part of one day. Where a mitred run needs jointing on site, allow into a second day. We tell you the exact plan before we start.
Can you fit worktops I have bought myself?
Yes, we regularly fit customer-supplied worktops from any merchant or online supplier. It is worth letting us check the sizes and the number of lengths before you order, because mitred corners and returns need more material than a plan suggests and a short length cannot be fixed afterwards.

Still deciding? A survey costs nothing and you will know exactly what the job involves.
