What Is Kitchen Door Replacement & Refacing?

Kitchen refacing is the replacement of doors, drawer fronts, end panels, plinths and cornices while retaining the existing unit carcasses. It changes everything you see and touch, leaving the boxes that hold it all up in place.

Whether it is worth doing comes down to one thing: the condition of the carcasses. If the bases are dry, the shelves are flat and the units are still true, refacing is excellent value. If the sink base has swollen or the hinges have pulled out of soft chipboard, refacing puts new doors on a failing frame.

Worth knowing

What Actually Decides Whether This Works

The carcass test is not negotiable

We open every unit, check the base under the sink, and test the hinge fixings. If the boxes will not take another decade, we will tell you to replace rather than reface — even though refacing is the easier sale.

Bespoke doors fit older kitchens

Kitchens more than fifteen years old often use sizes no catalogue offers any more. With joinery in-house we can make fronts to any size, which is what makes refacing possible on older kitchens at all.

Change the worktop at the same time

New doors against a worn worktop only draws attention to the worktop. Doing both together costs far less than doing them a year apart.

What Does Kitchen Door Replacement & Refacing Cost?

Prices depend on the room, the specification and how much of the existing layout changes. Every quote we give is fixed and in writing after a home visit — we do not price from photographs, because that is where surprise costs come from.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Door Replacement & Refacing

Is refacing a kitchen worth it?
Refacing is worth it when the carcasses are sound, the layout works and only the appearance is dated — it typically costs a fraction of a new kitchen and takes days rather than weeks. It is not worth it where units have water damage, dropped shelves or failing hinge fixings, because you are investing in a frame that is already going. We check the units before recommending either route.
Can you match doors for an older kitchen?
Yes. Kitchens over about fifteen years old often use unit sizes no current range matches, which is where in-house joinery matters — we can make fronts to any dimension and any profile. Where a standard range does fit, we will use it, because it is usually the cheaper option.
Can I keep my existing worktop?
Yes, though it is worth thinking hard about. New doors alongside a worn worktop tends to highlight the worktop rather than hide it, and doing both at the same visit costs considerably less than doing them separately. If the worktop is in good condition, keeping it is perfectly sensible.
How long is the kitchen out of use?
Very little. Doors and drawer fronts are swapped unit by unit, so the kitchen stays broadly usable throughout. If worktops are being changed at the same time, expect the sink to be disconnected for part of one day. Most customers cook normally through a refacing job.

Still deciding? A survey costs nothing and you will know exactly what the job involves.
