About us

Covering Derbyshire from Creswell

At Barbers Bathroom & Kitchens we design, supply and fit complete bathrooms, kitchens and bespoke joinery right across Derbyshire — from Whitwell, Clowne and Elmton on our doorstep out to Bolsover, Chesterfield, Dronfield and Alfreton. This is our home patch, we know it inside out, and there is no travel charge anywhere in it.

What we are known for here is the finish. Tiles set out so the cuts land where they should, doors that shut sweetly, sealed edges you will still be happy to look at in fifteen years. We take the extra time on those details because they are the parts of the room you see every single day.

Derbyshire homes are wonderfully varied — stone cottages, model village terraces, 1930s semis, and newer estate houses out towards Barlborough and Dronfield. Having all seven trades in-house means we can take on any of them and carry it through with the same faces from first visit to final clean, which is exactly how we like to work.

Working Across Derbyshire

Where Derbyshire Stops Being a Short Drive

Creswell sits in the Bolsover district, so the north-east corner of the county is genuinely local to us: Elmton, Whitwell, Hodthorpe, Clowne and Langwith are all inside three miles, and Bolsover, Barlborough and Shirebrook are five. Chesterfield is ten, Alfreton and Dronfield thirteen.

The 30-mile radius technically reaches Matlock, Bakewell, Belper, Ripley, Ilkeston and Hathersage. Mileage is misleading out there. The run west of Chesterfield climbs into the Peak, and a job at Hathersage — 22 miles on paper, the same as Nottingham — takes considerably longer to reach on a wet Monday morning. We do take Peak-side work, and we schedule it in blocks rather than as scattered single days, because a half-day snagging visit that costs ninety minutes of driving is a visit we would end up rushing.

What Derbyshire Housing Stock Means for a Bathroom

Four kinds of property make up most of what we work in here, and each one changes the job in a different way:

  • Colliery terraces around Creswell, Shirebrook, Bolsover and Whitwell — solid brick walls with no cavity, external soil stacks, and bathrooms formed decades later out of a rear bedroom or an outrigger. Expect the floor to need attention before anything is tiled.
  • Creswell Model Village — planned Edwardian housing in a conservation area. Nothing internal is restricted, but anything that changes the outside face of the building is, and that includes an extract terminal in the wrong place.
  • Interwar and 1930s semis across Chesterfield, Dronfield and Alfreton — shallow floor joists and lath-and-plaster ceilings. Shallow joists are the reason a true wet room in one of these needs a former dropped between them rather than a screed laid over them.
  • Newer estate housing at Barlborough and around Dronfield — timber-frame internal walls behind the plasterboard. Wall-hung basins, wall-hung WCs and heavy mirrored cabinets all need noggins fitted before the boarding goes back, which has to be decided at first fix, not at the end.

Building Control and Conservation Areas in Derbyshire

Our Derbyshire towns fall across five authorities: Bolsover District, Chesterfield Borough, North East Derbyshire, Amber Valley and Derbyshire Dales. The Building Regulations themselves are national and identical in all of them — what differs is which building control body you notify and how, and we handle that as part of the job.

Conservation areas are the part that genuinely varies. Creswell Model Village is the obvious one on our doorstep; the Dales towns have several. None of it stops a bathroom or kitchen being replaced. It affects windows, external vents, flues and anything else visible from the street, which is worth knowing before a design assumes an extract can go straight out through the front elevation.
