About us

Covering Nottinghamshire from Creswell

At Barbers Bathroom & Kitchens we design, supply and fit bathrooms, kitchens and bespoke joinery across Nottinghamshire — Worksop and Retford in Bassetlaw, the Mansfield and Ashfield towns, the Sherwood villages, and down as far as Southwell and Nottingham. Our base is on the county line, so most of it is a short run rather than a trek.

We are known for turning up when we say we will, keeping the house liveable while we are in it, and finishing properly. One team handles the plumbing, electrics, plastering, tiling and joinery, so nothing sits waiting on somebody else and no detail falls between trades.

Honestly, the best part of the job is handing a room back and watching somebody grin at it. That is what we are in it for, and it is why we would rather spend the extra half-day on the tiling and the trims than call a room finished when it is not quite there.

Working Across Nottinghamshire

Our Base Sits on the Nottinghamshire Line

Creswell is a Derbyshire village, but the county boundary runs barely a mile east of it. Worksop is four miles away and Cuckney is four — closer than Chesterfield, which is in our own county. That is why Bassetlaw and the Mansfield towns are not an outlying area for us; they are the middle of the patch.

From there the county opens out southwards: Warsop six miles, Edwinstowe and Mansfield Woodhouse eight, Mansfield nine, Ollerton ten, the Ashfield towns twelve to thirteen, Retford thirteen, Southwell fifteen, Hucknall sixteen and Nottingham twenty-two. Newark and Gainsborough sit at twenty on the far edges.

Past Hucknall the constraint stops being distance and becomes traffic. The run into Nottingham on the A60 at eight in the morning is a different journey from the same twenty-two miles at ten. We take Nottingham work — mostly larger multi-trade jobs where one team genuinely beats five contractors — and we book it in blocks so the driving is done once.

What Nottinghamshire Housing Stock Means for a Bathroom

The county changes character every few miles, and so does the work:

  • Georgian and early Victorian town property in Retford — high ceilings, sash windows, lath-and-plaster walls and original cornice. Matching a moulding rather than boxing it in is joinery work, and it is the reason a bathroom in one of these takes longer than the same room in a semi.
  • Ex-mining terraces across Warsop, Shirebrook, Mansfield Woodhouse and the Ashfield towns — solid walls, small back-of-house bathrooms, and drainage that was put in when the bathroom was, not when the house was. Layout changes here mean drainage, which is the single biggest cost variable in the job.
  • Sherwood estate villages — Cuckney, Norton, Edwinstowe and Ollerton, including Welbeck estate cottages. Some are listed and several sit in conservation areas. Internal work is rarely restricted; external anything usually is.
  • Interwar and post-war semis right across Mansfield and Ashfield, and Victorian terraces with rear outriggers as you get into Nottingham. Outrigger bathrooms are the ones where a wet room is worth considering, because the floor is coming up anyway.

Building Control Across Nottinghamshire

Our Nottinghamshire work sits under five authorities: Bassetlaw District for Worksop and Retford, Mansfield District for Mansfield, Mansfield Woodhouse and Warsop, Ashfield District for Sutton-in-Ashfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Hucknall, Newark and Sherwood for Ollerton, Edwinstowe, Rainworth and Southwell, and Nottingham City for the city itself.

The regulations do not change between them — Part P for the electrical work, Part G for the water and Part F for extraction apply the same everywhere in England. What changes is the building control route, and it is our job to know which one applies before the first fix goes in, not to discover it afterwards.
