Gas and electricity meters, consumer units and stopcocks are often in this void. They can be boxed neatly but must remain accessible, which shapes the design from the start.

Pull-outs need depth and structure

A full-depth pull-out unit is heavy when loaded. Runner rating and carcass construction matter more here than anywhere else in the house.

Consider a cloakroom instead

If there is standing headroom at the tall end and a waste run is possible, a downstairs WC may be a better use of the space — with storage built into what is left.

Is bespoke understairs storage worth the money?
It is the highest-return joinery per pound we do, because it converts space you already own and currently cannot use. A standard understairs cupboard gives access to perhaps a third of its volume; pull-outs and drawers give access to nearly all of it. In a hallway with no other storage, that is the difference between a tidy house and a permanent pile by the door.
Can you build around the gas and electric meters?
Yes, and it is very common. Meters, consumer units and stopcocks can be boxed into the design with hinged access panels so they remain fully reachable for reading and isolation. What we will not do is enclose them permanently, because that is both against the supplier requirements and a genuine safety issue.
Can you put a desk under the stairs?
Yes, an understairs desk works well where the tall end of the void has headroom for a chair. We build the desk to the right height, add a socket and USB point, and use the low end for drawers or a printer cupboard. Lighting matters more here than anywhere, because the space has no natural light.
Will you make good the hallway afterwards?
Yes, removing the old cupboard usually leaves damaged plaster, a redundant door lining and a break in the skirting. Plastering, matching the skirting and architrave profiles and finishing are all part of the job, handled by the same team. That is generally the part a joiner-only quote leaves you to sort out.
