What Is Bespoke Boot Rooms?

A boot room is a purpose-built entrance space combining seating, hanging, shoe storage and a hard-wearing floor, positioned so that outdoor clothing and footwear are removed before entering the rest of the house. It is normally formed in a rear porch, utility, hallway or garage conversion.

The joinery is straightforward; the design is not. Bench height, the depth of a cubby that must take a wellington boot, hook spacing at both adult and child height, and drying airflow around wet coats are the details that decide whether a boot room is used or ignored.

Worth knowing

What Actually Decides Whether This Works

Wet things need air, not a sealed cupboard

Coats put away wet in a closed cupboard will smell within a week. Open hanging with airflow, or a heated rail, is what makes the difference.

Bench height and depth matter

A bench at the wrong height is used as a shelf, not a seat. We set it around the people who will actually use it, including children.

The floor is doing the hardest work

This is the wettest, grittiest floor in the house. Slip resistance and durability come before appearance, and a level threshold makes it far easier to sweep.

What Does Bespoke Boot Rooms Cost?

Prices depend on the room, the specification and how much of the existing layout changes. Every quote we give is fixed and in writing after a home visit — we do not price from photographs, because that is where surprise costs come from.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bespoke Boot Rooms

How much space does a boot room need?
A useful boot room can be built into as little as 1.2 metres of wall length with a bench, hooks above and boot storage below. A dedicated room of around 2 x 2 metres allows tall cupboards, drying space and circulation. Rear porches, utilities and hallway ends are the most common locations we work with.
Can a boot room be combined with a utility?
Yes, and it is the most efficient use of space in most houses, because both want a hard floor, good ventilation and to sit by the back door. We usually put laundry appliances and the sink on one wall and the bench, hooks and boot storage on the other. Doing both as one project also saves on the flooring and decoration.
What flooring works best in a boot room?
Porcelain tile with a slip-resistance rating suitable for wet areas is the most durable option and copes with grit, mud and water indefinitely. Good quality luxury vinyl tile is a warmer, quieter and cheaper alternative that still handles wet use well. Both are far better here than timber or laminate, which will not survive standing water.
Do you make the joinery yourselves?
Yes, all our boot room joinery is made to the room rather than assembled from stock units, which matters because boot rooms are usually formed in awkward leftover spaces. Benches, cubbies and cupboards are built to the actual dimensions and scribed to the walls. All joinery is carried out to NVQ Level 3 Carpentry & Joinery standard.
