What Is Home Office Joinery?

Home office joinery is bespoke desking, shelving and storage built into a room so that a working space occupies a fraction of the floor area that freestanding furniture would need. It typically combines a fitted desk, cabinetry, shelving and integrated power and data.

The advantage over furniture is proportion. A fitted desk can be 500mm deep where a bought one is 700mm, can run wall to wall in an alcove, and can share the room with a bed or a sofa without dominating it — which matters, because most home offices are also a spare bedroom.

Is Home Office Joinery Right for You?

  • Anyone working from home in a room that also does something else
  • Box rooms too small for freestanding office furniture
  • Alcoves and understairs spaces being converted to a workspace

What Actually Decides Whether This Works

Get the desk height and depth right

Standard desks are 720–750mm high and 700mm deep. In a small room, 500–600mm depth works perfectly with a modern monitor and saves a significant amount of floor space.

Plan sockets and data before building

A workspace needs more power than people expect, and it wants it at desk level rather than at the skirting. Because the electrics are ours, that is built in rather than trailed later.

Dual-purpose rooms need a shutdown

If the room is also a guest bedroom, cupboard doors that close over the desk clutter make it a bedroom again in ten seconds.

What Does Home Office Joinery Cost?

Prices depend on the room, the specification and how much of the existing layout changes. Every quote we give is fixed and in writing after a home visit — we do not price from photographs, because that is where surprise costs come from.

Frequently Asked Questions About Home Office Joinery

Can you build a home office into a spare bedroom?
Yes, dual-purpose rooms are the most common home office we build. The trick is a fitted desk and storage along one wall — usually the alcove — leaving the floor clear for a bed or sofa bed. Cupboard doors that close over the working area let the room switch back to a bedroom in seconds.
How do you deal with cables and sockets?
Power, USB and network points are brought to desk level inside the joinery, with concealed trays and conduit routing the cables to the equipment. Because electrical work is handled by our own team, sockets are positioned where they are needed rather than where they happen to be. The finished desk has no visible cabling.
Can you fit a desk under the stairs?
Yes, provided the tall end of the void gives headroom for a chair. We build the desk at proper working height, add power and lighting, and use the lower section for drawers or a printer cupboard. Lighting is the critical part in an understairs workspace, since there is no natural light at all.
Can two people work in the same room?
Yes, twin workstations are a regular request. Two 1200mm desk runs on opposing or adjacent walls work better than one long shared desk, because it gives each person their own storage and lighting. The room size and window position usually decide the layout, which we set out at the design visit.

Still deciding? A survey costs nothing and you will know exactly what the job involves.
