What Is Fitted Wardrobes?

Fitted wardrobes are bespoke bedroom storage built into the room itself, using the full available height and depth rather than the fixed dimensions of freestanding furniture. They typically provide 20–30% more usable storage than a freestanding wardrobe in the same floor area.

The gain comes from the parts freestanding furniture cannot reach: the 400mm above a standard wardrobe, the awkward return beside a chimney breast, the tapering space under a sloping ceiling, and the depth that a standard carcass leaves behind it.

What Actually Decides Whether This Works

Sliding doors versus hinged

Sliding doors need no swing space, which suits small rooms, but they cost you around 100mm of internal depth and you can only ever open half the run at once. Hinged doors give full access and more usable depth. Room size usually decides it.

Design around what you own

Most wardrobes are built with too much long hanging and not enough drawer or shoe storage. We ask what actually goes in before drawing anything.

Lighting is worth doing at build stage

Interior LED lighting on a door switch is inexpensive while the unit is being made and awkward to retrofit. Because the electrics are ours, it is a decision rather than a subcontract.

Fitted wardrobes use the full height and depth of a room, including awkward spaces around chimney breasts and sloping ceilings that freestanding furniture wastes. They typically give 20–30% more usable storage in the same footprint and look built-in rather than added. The trade-off is that they do not move with you, so they suit long-term homes better than short stays.
Can you fit wardrobes into a room with a sloping ceiling?
Yes, sloping ceilings are one of the strongest arguments for bespoke joinery, because nothing off the shelf will use that space. We build the carcass to the angle of the slope and put hanging where the height allows, with drawers or pull-outs under the low section. Loft conversions and dormer bedrooms are regular work for us.
Do fitted wardrobes add value to a house?
Estate agents generally regard good fitted storage in a main bedroom as a positive selling feature, particularly in older properties with limited built-in storage. The value is mostly in presentation rather than a measurable uplift. What is certain is that they stay with the house, so they are worth doing well if you intend to be there a while.
What finishes can you do?
We work in painted MDF and timber, sprayed finishes, veneers and laminates, and we can match an existing colour or door style in the room. Painted shaker-style doors are the most requested finish across this area; handleless sprayed slab doors are the second. We will show you samples at the design visit.
