What Is Accessible & Mobility Bathrooms?

An accessible bathroom is defined as a bathroom designed to be used safely by someone with reduced mobility, typically combining level or low-threshold access, secure grab rails, a seat, a slip-resistant floor, and enough clear space to turn or to be assisted.

The work is mostly invisible. Grab rails need noggins or a plywood pattress behind the plasterboard, not plugs into a stud that is not there. Floor falls have to be gentle enough for a wheeled frame. Door widths and swing direction matter more than any fitting. Getting those right is the difference between a bathroom that helps and one that is merely fitted.

Worth knowing

What Actually Decides Whether This Works

Plan the whole route, not the shower

The doorway, the turning space and where a carer would stand matter as much as the shower itself. We look at the route into the room, not only the fittings going into it.

Contrast helps more than people expect

Visual contrast between floor, wall, sanitaryware and grab rails makes a bathroom significantly easier to use with reduced sight. It costs nothing to specify and is routinely overlooked.

Fixings are the whole safety story

A grab rail is only as good as what it is screwed into. We install structural backing behind the board while the wall is open — which is why fitting rails during a bathroom installation is far better than adding them afterwards.

What Does Accessible & Mobility Bathrooms Cost?

Prices depend on the room, the specification and how much of the existing layout changes. Every quote we give is fixed and in writing after a home visit — we do not price from photographs, because that is where surprise costs come from.

Frequently Asked Questions About Accessible & Mobility Bathrooms

Can you convert a bathroom for someone with mobility needs?
Yes, we install level-access wet rooms, walk-in showers, grab rails, seating and non-slip flooring for customers with reduced mobility. These conversions need careful planning around floor build-up, drainage falls and door widths, particularly in older properties where the joists run the wrong way. We survey the space and explain honestly what is achievable in your specific room.
Is there any funding help for an accessible bathroom?
A Disabled Facilities Grant is available through your local council — Bolsover District Council, Bassetlaw District Council, Mansfield District Council and Chesterfield Borough Council all administer them for their areas. Eligibility and the amount depend on an assessment by an occupational therapist and on household finances. We are happy to quote in the format a council assessment needs, but the application itself is between you and the council.
How quickly can an adaptation be done?
A straightforward conversion of an existing bathroom into a level-access shower room takes 8 to 15 working days on site. Where an adaptation is urgent — someone coming out of hospital, for example — tell us at first contact and we will be straight with you about whether we can hit the date. We would rather turn a job down than miss a date that matters that much.
Can grab rails be added to a bathroom we already have?
Yes, though the fixing is the important part. Rails must be anchored into timber, masonry or a plywood pattress rather than into plasterboard alone, so we open up and reinforce where the wall will not take the load. In a tiled bathroom this means a small amount of making good, which we handle as part of the work.

Still deciding? A survey costs nothing and you will know exactly what the job involves.
