What Is Media Wall Installation?

A media wall is a built-in feature wall housing a television, media equipment, storage and often an electric fire, with all cabling concealed within the structure. It is as much an electrical and plastering job as a joinery one, which is why so many end up unfinished.

The build involves a stud or framed structure, recesses formed to the exact dimensions of the television and fire, power and data brought to the right points inside the void, ventilation for equipment, plaster or panelled finish, and integrated lighting. Every one of those has to be planned before the first timber is cut.

Is Media Wall Installation Right for You?

  • Living rooms where the television and its cables dominate the wall
  • Anyone wanting an electric fire without a chimney
  • Open-plan spaces needing a defined focal point
  • Newer estate homes with a large blank wall and nothing to anchor it

A media wall typically takes 5 to 10 working days from framing to final decoration.

What Actually Decides Whether This Works

Measure the television, not the wall

A recess built to a rounded-off size looks wrong forever, and a future television may not fit. We build to your actual unit with a defined tolerance and plan the access needed to change it later.

Electric fires have real clearances

Every electric fire has manufacturer clearance and ventilation requirements. Ignoring them is both a warranty problem and a safety one, so the recess is built to the specification, not to the drawing.

Ventilation is not optional

Sealing an amplifier or games console into an airtight void will shorten its life. Concealed ventilation paths are designed in from the start.

What Does Media Wall Installation Cost?

Prices depend on the room, the specification and how much of the existing layout changes. Every quote we give is fixed and in writing after a home visit — we do not price from photographs, because that is where surprise costs come from.

Frequently Asked Questions About Media Wall Installation

Can you hide all the cables in a media wall?
Yes, concealing all power, aerial, HDMI and network cabling inside the structure is the main reason people build one. We run conduit within the frame so cables can be replaced later without opening the wall, and bring the power and data to the right points before boarding. Because the electrical work is ours, this is planned rather than improvised.
Can you fit an electric fire into a media wall?
Yes, inset electric fires are one of the most requested elements. Each model has specific clearance, recess and ventilation requirements set by the manufacturer, so we build the opening to those figures rather than to a standard size. It is worth choosing the fire before the design is finalised.
How deep does a media wall need to be?
A media wall usually projects 150mm to 300mm from the existing wall, depending on the depth of the television recess, whether a fire is included, and how much storage is built in. Where the room cannot afford that projection, the alternative is to recess into a stud wall — possible where there is a void behind, and something we check at survey.
Why do so many media walls end up unfinished?
Because they need a joiner, an electrician, a plasterer and a decorator in sequence, and most are built by one trade who then has to book the rest. The frame goes up, then the electrics wait, then the plastering waits, then nobody paints it. Handling all four in-house is precisely why we take these on.

Still deciding? A survey costs nothing and you will know exactly what the job involves.
